Former Bhoy Kenny Miller has a habit of stepping up when it counts and it doesn’t get any bigger than a potential Old Firm SPL title decider.
Miller never fully lived up to his reputation in a brief spell at Celtic Park managing just 43 appearances and 11 goals in his year at the club, the same cannot be said of his time in the blue half of Glasgow though.
Under Walter Smith’s guidance the ex-Wolves man has forged a deadly partnership alongside Kris Boyd with no fewer than 34 of Rangers’ 58 goals coming from the two men, including four in the past three games.
It’s little wonder the Celtic faithful hold their former hero in such contempt, of course his match winning double in the first Old Firm of this season is never likely to endear him to Rangers’ fiercest rivals.
The scenario here couldn’t look much brighter for Miller either as he comes up against a defence that conceded four just two weeks ago in Aberdeen.
Another day like that for the Bhoys’ backline and there will be more than a few questions asked of the logic Tony Mowbray used when shipping out Gordon Strachan’s stalwart duo Gary Caldwell and Stephen McManus in the January transfer window.
It is hard to imagine Artur Boric letting another cricket score past him but you would be mad to rule out Miller and Boyd both finding the net at some point.
Especially good news for punters is that both men are available at 5/4 to score anytime while 9/2 about both scoring in the anytime goalscorers doubled market stands out as a great price.
To be fair though if Celtic don’t come out of the traps early then you’re looking at a whole range of fantastic prices about Rangers success, none more so than their 90 minute price of 11/8.
Mowbray’s hopes aren’t enhanced by Robbie Keane’s injury worries with the Tottenham loanee a major doubt to feature after finding the net for the first time at Parkhead in last week’s 1-0 win over Dundee United.
If Keane is out then the onus really will be on Diomansy Kamara and Marc-Antoine Fortune to spark up a good enough partnership to threaten David Weir and the brilliant Madjid Bougherra.
It’s a tough ask but in recent weeks they have shown themselves capable of ensuring Alan McGregor needs to be on top form while Fortune looks the best bet to add to his goal tally at 7/4 to score anytime.
However, and I know Celtic fans will hate me for saying it, I just can’t see them leaving Ibrox with any points or with their title dreams still intact.
I know in the heat of the tensest derby in European football strange things can happen but I just feel Walter Smith has the psychological edge over his opposite number.
