Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that he was extremely happy with Eden Hazard’s performance at Wigan Athletic.
The Belgian was at his creative best in the 2-0 win, making a significant impression during his Premier League debut.
As well as setting up Branislav Ivanovic’s opening goal, Hazard won a penalty for Chelsea’s second, all within the space of the first ten minutes.
Speaking about his new midfielder, Di Matteo said: “Hazard was outstanding. He showed all his qualities and it was a pleasure to watch him.”
“He was a big threat and difficult to mark. He combined well with his team-mates, exactly what we were looking for.”
“He’s got great technical ability. He’s got a burst of pace as well, he can play with his back to goal and he’s got a lot that he can bring to our team.”
Overall, the Chelsea boss was extremely happy with his new signing and you can see why. If he can continue to have this impact on proceedings, he will be worth every penny of the £32m paid for him.
Hazard will now hope to go from strength to strength as the weeks go by. He has shown everyone what he is capable of and now the expectation is even greater than before.
The 21-year-old will make his Stamford Bridge debut on Wednesday evening against Reading where the home fans are likely to give him a cracking reception.
In other Chelsea news, they are still being linked with Wigan midfielder Victor Moses, who played against the Blues this weekend.
This speculation has been a cause of frustration Wigan boss Roberto Martinez who said: “I don’t understand why we put our players in this situation.”
“The transfer window is a fantastic part of our game, but it should close before the official games start.”
“I think it’s disrespectful to the fans and very unfair on the human part of the footballers.”
Chelsea have ten days or so to try and complete a move for Moses, who could be lining up alongside Eden Hazard by September.
