Surprise new leaders Schalke (7-4 Bluesq) could take a huge step towards a first-ever Bundesliga crown – and first German championship in 52 years – should they inflict a third successive league defeat on second-placed Bayern Munich (7-4 Bet365) this weekend.

Bayern recently won 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen in the German Cup semi-final after extra time, but the home side are the in-form team in Germany, having lost only once in 14 after last week’s impressive 2-0 win at long-time leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

In Kevin Kuranyi, a two-goal scorer last week and now the league’s top marksman with 17 after a run of 5 goals in 4 games, they have a man in form whilst Bayern battled to an injury-time win over Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday. This fixture finished 1-1 in Bavaria in early November, and a repeat this time is 12-5 with Bet365 and Stan James.

Bayer Leverkusen (5-4  Stan James) travel to Eintracht Frankfurt (12-5 Bet365) having won only one of their last six – and lost three in four. Five points off top spot, top scorer Stefan Kiessling may again be ruled out –  while the home side have boosted their Europa League hopes by winning their last two 2-1 – inflicting defeat on Bayern two weeks ago. Bayer can take heart from a 4-0 win in the home fixture earlier in the season, while Bet365, Stan James and Coral are offering 12-5 on the draw.

Given Bayer’s recent stumbles, Borussia Dortmund (around 8-5 888Sport) and Werder Bremen’s (15-8 Stan James) Champions League ambitions have grown markedly in recent weeks. The teams meet at Borussia with the home side having picked up 10 points from 12 – the one draw coming last week at rock-bottom Hertha Berlin. German Cup finalists, Werder are unbeaten in eight, including three league wins on the spin. The sides drew 1-1 earlier in the season, the same outcome this time is noted at 12-5 with four firms including Bet365, Victor Chandler and Stan James.

Europa League quarter-finalists Hamburg (1-2 Bluesq) will have been in action in that competition days before they face Hannover (7-1 Coral) – although that should be no excuse against the second-from-bottom side, who have lost 11 of their last 13 in the league. Hamburg themselves are without a win in three league games, whilst this game finished 2-2 earlier in the season. The draw this time is 10-3 with Bet365 and Coral.

VfB Stuttgart (5-11 Stan James) host Borussia Moenchengladbach (7-1 Bet365) on the back of an eye-catching triumph over Bayern. With eight wins in 11 league games since the winter break, Christian Gross could yet guide his side into the Europa League on current form. Borussia meanwhile earned a first win in six, 1-0 against Hamburg last time out, all but guaranteeing safety – they currently lie in the 12th. A goalless draw was the outcome last time between the sides, and the draw this time is a 7-2 chance with Bet365.

Nuremburg (11-10 with seven firms including Sporting Bet, Tote Sport and Bwin.com) in 15th, one point above safety, lost for the first time in six at Werder last week – and host mid-table Mainz (13-5 Stan James) whose European hopes have all but ended after two successive defeats. The draw is on offer at 12-5 with Stan James and Bet365.

Cologne (7-5 Sporting Bet), 4-1 victors at Hannover last weekend, host bottom side Hertha Berlin (9-4 Coral) knowing three points would all but guarantee their Bundesliga status for another year. Hertha meanwhile held Dortmund last week and having demolished Wolfsburg last time on their travels, they are capable of maintaining their faint survival hopes. The draw is a 12-5 shot with Bet365.

Struggling Freiburg (5-4 Coral) host fellow relegation rivals Bochum (12-5 888Sport) with the home side aiming to go level on points with their opponents. Freiburg have picked up four points from six in their last two games, while free-falling Bochum have lost their last four. Incidentally Freiburg were 2-1 winners when the teams met earlier in the season – while the odds on a draw are 12-5 with Victor Chandler and Bet365.

Mid-table rivals Wolfsburg (17-20  Bet365) and Hoffenheim (10-3 Victor Chandler) meet, both sides a shadow of last season when they were arguably the stories of 2008/09. Champions Wolfsburg could at least snatch a European spot if they maintain league form that has seen them win five of their last six – although they will have been in Europa League action against Fulham on Thursday.

Hoff meanwhile have won only two of their last 15, drawing their last two – they are 13-5 with Coral and Stan James to make it three on the spin.
