Australian legend Shane Warne has stated that England and Kevin Pietersen need to resolve their differences soon to get the batsman playing international cricket again.
Warne believes that Pietersen will regret his actions and will want to do one thing now – play cricket for England as soon as possible.
The 32-year-old of course missed the third Test match defeat against South Africa and has not been included in the One Day International squad against the Proteas or the World Twenty20 squad.
This was due to Pietersen failing to deny that he sent a number of text messages to opposition teammates criticising captain Andrew Strauss.
But now, Warne says that the issue needs to be sorted as the Three Lions will miss him a lot: “Kevin will be one of the first people to admit that he’s acted in a way that’s been a bit silly and stupid.” said the Aussie.
“Both sides are at fault – the bottom line is Kevin Pietersen is not playing international cricket, which is a tragedy.” He added.
The Englishman’s future in his national side has now come under a great deal of doubt and it is possible that he may not play for his country for a long time, if ever.
There is no doubt that the batsman is a match winner and one of the most gifted players to have ever played for England.
Warne now believes that it is time for both Strauss and Pietersen to settle their differences – even if it was not in the most conventional method.
He said: “Strauss and Pietersen could have gone down the pub and had a beer. If they’d punched the absolute whatever out of each other to sort it out, so be it.”
England get their One Day International series against South Africa on Friday in Cardiff. For different reasons, neither of these players will be involved though as the England Test captain does not play in this format of the game.
